Dog Days Sales are a Hit!

Even at 3pm on a Thursday, the stores downtown all are busily assisting patrons during the oldest tradition in Columbia. Over 30 locations are participating in the coordinated sale, which runs NOW through the WEEKEND.
"Business is great! Which was a shock, because we're normally not busy in the morning," said Elly of Elly's Couture. Everything from vintage dress shoes, to Blue Note merch, to camera equipment, and even fragrances are all on sale.

Roots 'n Blues Meeting Reminder

The City is hosting an informational meeting for all liquor licensees in the downtown area to review City and State regulations, and answer questions relevant to alcohol sales/consumption at downtown bars and restaurants during this two-day event.

Bill Alton, State Division of Alcohol and Tobacco Control, and Ken Burton, City Police Chief, as well as Janice Finley and other City staff, will be in attendance to provide a detailed explanation concerning what is required of the licensed establishment in order to remain in compliance with State laws and City ordinances, and to provide a clear understanding of what is and is not allowed with regard to alcohol sales/consumption during the Festival. Detailed information will also be presented in reference to licensees wanting to apply for a temporary extension of their existing liquor license to an area adjoining their existing licensed premise (caterers permit) as well as sidewalk café licenses.

The informational meeting will be held at 3:00 p.m., July 13, 2009, in the City Council Chambers, 701 East Broadway. It is imperative you attend this very important meeting.

Festival Reimburses City for Costs

At last night's Council meeting, Thumper Entertainment reimbursed the City approximately $38,000 for the cost of services provided at the 2008 festival. These services were primarily public safety oriented.

City Council Meeting

A couple of relevant items on tonight's Council agenda:

1. Roots 'n Blues Street Closure Request
This report was postponed from the last Council meeting but will be addressed tonight. Again, this is a report and will be addressed at the end of the meeting. There is no public comment section for reports but there is a general public comment section at the end of the meeting. A public hearing will be held on July 20 when the Council reviews the entire festival plan, rather than just the street closure request.

Two things of note: there is a revised timeline for the festival approval process and a new downtown business outreach plan. The festival organizers are putting together a significant outreach plan to help include and promote District businesses. We will keep you posted on this.

2. TIF Projects
Introduction and first read. The public hearing on both the Tiger Hotel and the 10th & Locust Project will be held on July 20. Again, there will be a general public comment time at the very end of the meeting.
