SBD endorses Regency Hotel Project

The Board of the Columbia Special Business District recently endorsed the proposed Regency Hotel TIF project. The hotel would be a catalytic project for the downtown area, creating 25 to 35 jobs and increasing economic activity in shops and restaurants. We look forward to this improvement in our eastern gateway.

Public input sought on downtown planning charrette report.

The public is invited to review a report from H3 Studio Inc. regarding the recently completed downtown planning charrette at an informational session Tuesday, Jan. 11, from 5-7 p.m. in conference room 1B of City Hall.


The charrette process, hosted in June by the Downtown Columbia Leadership Council (DCLC) and facilitated by H3 Studio, was designed to transform marginal areas of downtown while maintaining its existing strengths. The DCLC was charged with reviewing the recommendations from H3 Studio and presenting a report to Council following the review and public input.


On Tuesday, DCLC members will answer questions and provide additional information. Comment cards will be available for public input, and display boards showcasing the plan recommendations for two areas of downtown (North Village Arts District and Broadway/Providence Corridor) will be available for review.
"This downtown planning charrette resulted in considerable engagement and participation from just about every stakeholder in the downtown area, as well as the general public,” said Assistant City Manager Tony St. Romaine. “I think the DCLC has been very pleased with the finished plan written by H3 Studio, and both they and I look forward to receiving input and to continue the process of evaluating ideas that will add to the economic vitality of Columbia's downtown."

MU Homecoming Parade

Due to the fact that ESPN Game Day will be held on the MU Quad the morning of Saturday, October 23, the Homecoming Parade will be pushed back to noon. The parade usually lasts between 1 1/2 to 2 hours.



"No parking" will be enforced on 6th Street, from Broadway to Elm, and 9th Street, from University to Broadway. Parking will not be restricted along Broadway. 

Parking will be made available as soon as traffic control measures are removed and most of the pedestrian traffic has cleared the area.  It is the city's goal to open up parking spaces for customers as soon as possible.

We know that parades are often difficult for merchants so we appreciate everyone's patience and support this year.

Swank moves to larger digs.

Swank Boutique is moving just down the street--the larger space will help with their business expansion. 

Says owner Erin Keltner:

"What's new about 913 E. Broadway? New styles, a larger space, more dressing rooms, a new dressing area and an extensive new system to make your entire customer experience with Swank Boutique and Swank Boutique Online better. Oh, and did we mention our new MEN'S section?!?! I know! We're excited to debut it for you and what better way than to throw a party!"

Swank Boutique's grand opening is Wednesday, October 20th.

Graphics & print shop comes to 9th.

Recently opened Wall Candy located on 9th Street, is a graphic printing company dedicated to providing affordable, customized graphic printing services to Columbia.

Owner San Correll and his Business partner Jeremy Elson opened the business last month after recognizing that a three college town would be a great market for customizable graphic printing company. Correll, a graduate of Columbia College, specializes in the technical aspect of the business while Jeremy Elson, a student at Mizzou, provides the needed creative inspiration.

After a month in the biz however the two have decided to tweak their company's image by changing the name from Wall Candy to The Defining Print. Elson and Correll feel that the new name better encompasses the business's products.

The Defining Print (formerly Wall Candy) specializes in customized paper posters, banners, and relocatable wall hangings--all at affordable prices. The Defining Print also specializes in a fast turnaround; from the time they receive a picture from the customer to the time they send out the finished product is usually one day or less.

Correll and Elson are excited about the name change and their future here in The District.

New Vietnamese Restaurant on the Way

The Saigon Bistro located on 904 Broadway Blvd. is set for opening coming this November. The new restaurant is owned by Jenny Lam, and will serve authentic Vietnamese cuisine.

Lam is a native of Vietnam but now lives in the Columbia area. She is excited about the possibility of opening a restaurant that showcases some of her country's finest food.

Lam recognized a need for her restaurant when she noticed, "Columbia has a lot of Japanese, Chinese, and Thai food but no Vietnamese restaurants."

The Saigon Bistro will offer a menu full of authentic Vietnamese food which will include items such as, fried chicken wings, salads, noodles, and sweet and sour pork. Lam cites Vietnamese food as being very healthy and hopes that will be one of the things attracting people to her new restaurant.

Lam thinks that new option of Vietnamese food will be an exciting new choice to Columbia's already exciting restaurant scene.
